5 breathtaking Greek Islands you need to visit next summer

5 breathtaking Greek Islands you need to visit next summer

If you’re chasing an island paradise off the beaten track, secluded beaches, nightlife that keeps you partying all night long, and authentic Greek hospitality, you need to check out our pick of the top 5 must-see Greek Islands!

Antipaxos

With rugged cliffs, natural sea caves, white sandy beaches, and postcard perfect turquoise bays, Antipaxos is the hidden gem of the Greek Ionian Islands. Being only accessible by boat, and with a population of just 20 people, you might find yourself completely alone as you sail into hidden bays, dive from your yacht into crystal clear water, and swim to the sandy beach shore. Have you been on a wine tour or two, and fancy yourself as a bit of a wine connoisseur? Lucky for you the island is also covered in vineyards, and you can unwind with a glass of their famous drop at one of the pop-up tavernas that appear during the summer months at the popular Vrika Beach and Voutoumis Beach.

Paros

Nestled between party destinations Ios and Mykonos, Paros is the perfect pitstop away from the chaos. Imagine rolling hills and a plethora of pristine beaches, combined with balmy evenings made for dining on the terraces of local tavernas, and you’ll have an idea of what Paros is all about. The rabbit-warren streets of its main town, Parikia, are the perfect place to pick up that souvenir you promised your Great-Aunt or spoil yourself with handmade jewellery, clothes or shoes. If people watching from a waterfront cafe is more your idea of relaxing, then you’ll be pleased to find one of Greece’s greatest culinary creations in Paros, the Freddo Espresso. After an adrenaline fix rather than a caffeine fix? You’re in luck! Paros is also a hub for watersports, and depending on how active you feel, many of the golden pebbled beaches (such as the aptly named Golden Beach) offer windsurfing, kitesurfing, diving, and SUP activities to suit every skill level. But for the perfect island experience, jump on a converted traditional fishing boat and head out on a day trip to Antiparos, a nearby uninhabited island where you can explore sea caves, bake on secluded beaches, have your very own boat party, and jump straight from the deck into the azure Aegean sea.

Paxos

Legend has it that Poseidon – Greek god of the Sea – made Paxos a hideaway holiday spot for himself and his wife, and even at the height of summer today, tranquility is key here. You’ll feel as though you have stepped back into a Greece of the past, with 19th century manor houses tucked amongst olive groves, and little tavernas dotting the village ports. An olive oil tasting, or three, is an absolute must as you explore the colourful villages of Gaios on the east coast, and Lakka, on the northern tip of the island. Paxos is home to virtually translucent waters, perfect for diving and snorkelling. With such a laid back vibe, it’s hard to peel yourself away from the pristine beaches, but hiking up to castle ruins and traditional lighthouses by the towns provide spectacular views over the perfect Ionian coastline.

Corfu

With a thriving backpacker party scene, epic architecture, pristine beaches and beach clubs nestled by hillside villages, Corfu offers everything you could want from an authentic Greek Island experience. Corfu is a large island, and exploring the lush green scenery and goldmine of hidden bays via scooter is the best way to see it all! Come evening, let your hair down as the island comes alive with resort-vibe hostels for backpackers and friendly locals. Kerkyra (Corfu) town has something for every mood, including an array of museums, ancient forts, monasteries, lively bars, and even a water park to let your inner child loose. On the northern tip of the Island, in Kassiopi, you can climb to its Byzantine-style castle that overlooks the fishing village, try freshly caught seafood in one of the local tavernas, or spend the day sunbathing at one of three perfect beaches right by the town.

Santorini

When you think of Greece, it’s the blue and white villages, all perched dubiously high on a cliff face, that are scattered through your Instagram feed every European summer. This paradise is Santorini, and never fear, it’s not just for honeymooning couples! Being the largest island in the Cyclades chain there is plenty of room for anyone and everyone to adventure, relax, and party. Home to its very own (dormant) volcano, those that are brave enough can take a boat trip to climb its crater, or if lazing on the beach is more your style, the famous black beach is calling your name! Thanks to Santorini’s volcanic activity, this beach features a beautiful black sand which is perfectly paired against the vibrant blue sea. Dotted with cabanas and a beach bar, you can’t go wrong! For spectacular sea views, and a bit of a workout, hiking between Fira and Oia towns takes you past little churches and celebrity mansions. If you’re joining us on a 9 or 11 day Greek Islands Tour you’ll have the chance to join us on a hike to Oia! You’ll want to find yourself the perfect spot for the famous Santorini sunset, before heading back to Fira as the night comes alive with backpackers from every corner of the world falling in and out of bars and clubs. The night isn’t complete until you find yourself in a late-night Souvlaki shop…the essential Greek Island experience!

Our tours through the Greek islands offer something for everyone as you discover all the beauty this country has to offer!
