The Best Hikes in Santorini

Santorini is famous for its sunset views looking over the whitewashed villages and cliffs. But there’s so much more to it than just the blue-and-white buildings, and hiking is one of the best ways to truly experience this volcanic island. Walking trails connect villages, viewpoints and coastal paths, revealing a quieter and more authentic side of Santorini that many visitors miss.
From iconic caldera walks to short summit hikes and inland routes, these are some of the best hikes in Santorini.
Fira to Oia Hike
The Fira to Oia hike is definitely Santorini’s most iconic walk, tracing the caldera edge with sweeping views over the Aegean Sea and volcanic cliffs. This point-to-point trail covers around 10 kilometres and typically takes 3-5 hours, depending on pace and photo stops (and there are many!). The route passes through small villages and into the open air, combining paved walkways, dirt tracks and stone steps.
The hike is moderate, with gentle but constant elevation changes rather than steep climbs. It’s suitable for most travellers with a reasonable fitness level, though the lack of shade and uneven surfaces can make it more challenging in summer.
Distance: 10km (one way)
Estimated duration: 4-5 hours (with stops)
Difficulty: Moderate with a few minor inclines
Max Ascent: 326m total elevation gain
Here’s a little insider tip for you:
Walking from Fira to Oia saves the best views for last and the sunset in Oia is one that you don’t want to miss! Plan for an early morning start and spend the day exploring the stunning shops and restaurants in Oia, or wait until the midday heat has subsided to start your trek in the afternoon.
There’s so much to say about this incredible hike, we’ve written an entire Oia to Fira Hiking Guide on it - be sure to check this out before taking it on!
Getting to Fira
Start in Fira, which is also a great place to stay with plenty of accommodation, or it can be easily reached by bus from anywhere across the island. The hike finishes in Oia, where frequent buses and taxis make it easy to return.

Skaros Rock Hike
The Skaros Rock hike is a short but striking walk near Imerovigli village, leading to the remains of a medieval fortress perched above the sea. This out-and-back trail takes around 45-90 minutes and offers dramatic coastal views with far fewer people than the main caldera route.
The hike is easy to moderate, with uneven stone steps and narrow paths but minimal elevation gain. It’s ideal for travellers wanting a scenic walk without committing to a full-day hike.
Distance: 1.5 km return
Estimated duration: 30-45 minutes
Difficulty: Easy - Moderate
Max Ascent: 90m elevation gain
Getting to Skaros Rock
Begin in Imerovigli, just a short bus ride from Fira. The trailhead is clearly marked near the village, with paths leading down toward Skaros Rock.

Pyrgos to Ancient Thera Hike
This inland hike links the traditional village of Pyrgos with the ancient ruins of Ancient Thera, offering a quieter and more rural side of Santorini. The trail takes around 2-3 hours and follows dirt paths, old stone tracks and gentle climbs across the island’s interior.
The route is moderate, with steady uphill sections and very little shade. It’s best suited to hikers comfortable with sustained walking and warm conditions.
Distance: 4.2 km (one way)
Estimated duration: 2-2.5 hours
Difficulty: Moderate
Max Ascent: 250m elevation gain (the highest point is 556m near Profitis Ilias)
Getting to Pyrgos
Take a bus to Pyrgos and begin hiking from the village centre. From Ancient Thera, you can continue down toward Perissa or Kamari, where buses and taxis are available. Or reward yourself with an afternoon enjoying the famous black sand beaches of Santorini.

Perissa to Ancient Thera Hike
Starting near the black-sand beach of Perissa, this hike climbs up Mesa Vouno to the ruins of Ancient Thera. The trail takes around 1.5 - 2 hours and features rocky paths and sweeping views over Perissa and the surrounding coastline.
This hike is moderate to challenging due to the steady uphill climb and exposed terrain. It’s best for hikers with a reasonable fitness level and is far more enjoyable in cooler temperatures. We suggest saving this one for the shoulder seasons or being prepared for an early morning start to really make the most of it.
Distance: 3 km (one way)
Estimated duration: 1.5 - 2 hours
Difficulty: Moderate - Challenging
Max Ascent: 360 m elevation gain
Here’s a little insider tip for you:
Consider going up through Perissa, and then descending toward Kamari rather than retracing your steps for a gentler finish. This also means you can stop by Kamari beach on your way home for a well-deserved swim stop.
Getting to Perissa
Catch a bus to Perissa and follow the signs toward Ancient Thera. After exploring the ruins, you can return the same way or descend toward Kamari and catch a bus back.

What to Bring on a Hike in Santorini
Santorini’s trails are exposed, rocky and often without shade, so packing a few essentials will make your hike far more comfortable.
- Plenty of water - At least 0.5 litres per hour of the hike, or more in warmer months.
- Sun protection - Hat, sunglasses and sunscreen are essential as many trails are fully exposed.
- Sturdy walking shoes - Trails can be rocky, uneven and dusty, so supportive footwear is recommended.
- Light snacks - Fruit, nuts or energy bars are useful for longer hikes in the mountains. On trails such as the Oia to Fira hike, there are plenty of shops and restaurants at each end to stock up.
- Phone or camera - Many trails offer some of the best viewpoints on the island. Check Greek regulations before packing the drone - much of Santorini lies under restricted airspace.
- Small backpack - Useful for carrying water, snacks, any extra layers and all the souvenirs you might pick up from little stores along the way!

When to Hike in Santorini
The best time to hike in Santorini is Spring (April - June) and Autumn (September - October) when temperatures are warm but more comfortable for walking.
During Summer (July - August) temperatures can easily exceed 30°C, so it’s best to start hikes early in the morning or later in the afternoon to avoid the heat and crowds.
Winter hikes are possible but be prepared to battle the wind, and some services along the trails may be closed.

Santorini Hiking Tips
- Start early - Popular trails can get busy by mid-morning, especially in peak season - so set those alarms and embrace the clear morning views.
- Check the weather - Strong winds and intense heat can make exposed trails more challenging. Get yourself familiar with your weather app and check it frequently leading up to your hike.
- Take your time - Many hikes pass incredible viewpoints, villages and churches worth stopping for. Give yourself an extra hour or two before planning any return buses.
- Follow the marked paths - Most main routes are well signposted, but staying on the trail helps avoid loose or unstable ground. Download an offline hiking map onto your phone as an extra precaution if you are prone to getting lost!
- Plan transport - If you hike one way (for example, Fira to Oia), buses and taxis make it easy to return. Ask your accommodation for the phone number of the local taxis.
